Friday Night Live hosts, Mike Goldman, Ryan Fitzgerald and Bree Amer return to Big
Brother for another year of madcap antics in Friday night games.
Tää on myös hyvä uutinen, vaikka en alussa monsterista pitäny. Ja vaikka toivonki että FNL:ää keksitää jotaa uutta ens kaudeks, alkaa olla aika nähtyjä ne geimssit.

enews kirjoitti: Gretel evicted, Kyle and Jackie intrude

The Ten Network has got the seven year itch and separated itself from Gretel Killeen and gone and got hitched to the devil in Kyle Sandilands and his sidekick Jackie O.

Given Sandilands' at times appalling and oafish performances on Australian Idol, it's a move Ten and its producing cohort, Endermol Southern Star, could very much regret.

Sandilands is a polarising figure: Idol ratings have shrunk since he's been involved with the program. He of course isn't to blame; it's the quality of the contestants this year in particular, and the inability of many of them to hold an audience.

As of last Thursday Ten and Endermol Southern Star hadn't resigned for this year, despite claims six weeks ago that there had been an unofficial agreement.

This statement does take it a bit further towards signing. In fact Ten is now saying this announcement of the new hosts means BB will be back.

It will, with significant cost cuts and changes in approach: it has to do something. It is likely, with Kyle Sandilands, to return to a nasty streak. That will not be nice.

Ten has wanted to cut costs and make changes in the format to match the ailing ratings to the revenue: part of Ten's problems is that major advertisers who might like Big Brother, believe it now too expensive.

Ten is making a big push to match ratings and revenue: in the case of Big Brother (and Idol next year), that will involve a cut in costs to try and bring about some alignment.

And if they thought there were PR problems this year and last on BB, just wait till Kyle Sandilands goes off like a time bomb next year, as he is known to do on his radio program with Ms O in full support.

Australian Idol advertisers will not want any association with BB, so watch for Sandilands to leave the Idol judging panel next year because of Big Brother.

Ten thought the return of Dicko as a judge for Idol this year would help. He's been a bit more rigorous (and generous) than the others. Kyle Sandilands hasn't been in the best of form and has struggled with Dicko's presence.

Sandilands and Jackie O might be big deal in Sydney breakfast radio Monday to Friday, but they do not travel well to other markets.

Gretel Killeen's skewering isn't before time. She's been increasingly shrill and a source of worry for remaining BB fans, although she remains the only woman in TV who can control a live audience and run a TV show at the same time.

What's interesting is that Ten is trying to leverage off the popularity Sandilands and his sidekick have in the demo in Sydney for BB, rather than create a star by finding someone different to replace Gretel.

It's a sign of how the network and the producers have run out of ideas. BB must be near terminal. Next year would have to be its last gasp for Australia if the changes don't work.

That's why Ten is developing a local version of So You Think You Can Dance.

"Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, hosts of Australia's highest-rating FM radio show, will host Big Brother 2008, replacing Gretel Killeen who has decided to move on to other projects.

"Network Ten (TEN) and Endemol Southern Star (ESS) made the announcement today and confirmed Big Brother's return to TEN in a tighter, re-energised format that will be more interactive than ever before."

Gretel Killeen said: "Working on Big Brother has been an extraordinary, challenging and rewarding experience. I'm really proud of what we've achieved but I now have the 'seven year itch' and am busting to get on with a million new things, including my first feature film which we're shooting in the new year."

"David Mott, TEN's chief programming officer, thanked Gretel for seven exceptional years as Big Brother host, saying: "We thought long and hard about whether there could even be a Big Brother without Gretel, so synonymous has she become with the franchise in Australia. Gretel's wish to concentrate on new projects gave us the opportunity to start at the top in making BB08 a completely different show."

"Southern Star Group chief executive officer, Hugh Marks, said: "Gretel has played a pivotal role in bringing Big Brother to Australian audiences, and we can't thank her enough for seven wonderful years as host.

"Next year with new hosts, a re-energised format and greater levels of interactivity than ever before, I'm confident we will attract a larger share of the target audience for many years to come."

Yes, well, it would help if Ten signed up to make the program next year.

Daily Telegraph kirjoitti: Idol King Kyle reigns at Ten

Channel Ten may as well be renamed Station Sandilands next year, with 2DAY FM shock jock Kyle Sandilands yesterday confirming he would be hosting the network's two biggest programs in 2008.
Industry speculation this week suggested Sandilands would get the boot from Australian Idol following news he and his radio show co-host Jackie O will take the Big Brother reins from Gretel Killeen next year.

It was believed Ten were looking to trim the overgrown Idol judging panel, with Sandiland's BB signing providing the perfect opportunity.

However Confidential can reveal "King Kyle'' will definitely be holding court at Ten after the media personality revealed he had put pen to paper on his Idol 2008 contract last week.

"I'm going to be a busy boy but the money will be great,'' Sandilands said.

In addition to hosting both programs, Sandilands will spend the first three months of the year in LA, overseeing his girlfriend Tamara Jaber's multi-album signing with US label Island Def Jam.

Herald Sun kirjoitti: Support for departing Big Brother host Gretel Killeen

CHANNEL 10 has a job on its hands convincing Melbourne viewers that Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O are right to replace Big Brother host Gretel Killeen.

Readers emails to Confidential yesterday overwhelmingly supported the axed Killeen.

"I think that Gretel did a really good job keeping everything together under difficult circumstances." reader Greg wrote. "Kyle and Jackie O are more well known in Sydney."

Robyn said: "My husband and I decided when we read Kyle was to be host of Big Brother, we would never watch it again. He is a drag, a bore on television. I bet the ratings will drop."

Cocoa wrote: "The credit of the show goes to Gretel. She had the maturity and smarts to run with the dialogue, adapt accordingly, and could pretty much sum up the people she was interviewing."

Tim Brunero kirjoitti: My nomination is still Gretel

Showing the kind of foresight John Howard must rue BB host Gretel Killeen has quit while she's ahead and left Big Brother before the ratings slide really begins.

What a blow for the show. It could well be the knockout punch.

And while many might delight in her departure from a program that most love to hate the truth is she is what made it more than simply a celebration of the banal the crass and the buxom.

Because like it or not the show reaches millions of Australians, especially teenagers, every year.

It airs for a whopping 300 hours each season, feeds the most popular website in the country and provides endless fodder for breakfast radio, trash mags and newspaper gossip sections.

Its cultural impact is enormous.

And while much of its subject matter is pure titillation, there are times when it becomes an important forum for debates around serious issues.

These have ranged from sexual assault, to 'free(ing) th refugees', from racism to bullying, from homosexuality to citizenship.

In fact my own motivation for appearing on the show was to use it as a soapbox to discuss the achievements of unions and the counter-productivity of the war in Iraq.

The host must have the authority, wisdom and wit to handle such controversies.

Not to mention when the wrong person get's evicted ala Bree Amer in 2004, or when you have to pad for half an hour in front of two million viewers because votes are being recounted, as happened during this year's finale.

And there are times when housemates are highly vulnerable, discussing on national TV their history of child abuse or a recent still born birth or the death of a family member.

And finally as a matter of routine her job is to be the first person housemates speak to after the most psychologically bruising experience they are ever likely to experience.

It was in these situations that Gretel Killeen excelled.

But will a professional urger like Kyle Sandilands be able to muster such gravitas?

Perhaps, maybe this is why the morning shock jock has been noticeably softening his image on this year's Australian Idol, liberally praising contestants.
Or maybe he's just been neutered by Ian "Dicko" Dickson.

Will Jackie O be able to play the de facto mother to the girls and the reluctant object of affection for the boys?

Will either one be able to handle a live audience, an unruly housemate, and the odd technical hitch or two all with an executive producer, Big Brother himself no less, barking instructions into their ear?

It's quite a balancing act to make the most important show on Network Ten cheesy and fun for kids, sexy for adolescents and an interesting social experiment for adults.

Whether they're up to the task or not Gretel's quick wit, charm, intelligence and infectious laugh will be sorely missed, at the very least by me.

Pity I can't say the same about John Howard.

Daily Telegraph kirjoitti: Jackie O's baby plan's smokin'

GLAMOROUS radio host Jackie O should be well-prepared for the daunting schedule of being a mum.

She's had plenty of practice, working the 2DayFM breakfast shift and coping with tantrums from co-host Kyle Sandilands.

The queen of breakfast radio has revealed she is desperately trying to have a baby.

"I'm clucky ... my husband and I are both ready for it,'' the 32-year-old said.

In a candid interview with The Sunday Telegraph, the top-rating breakfast show host has told how impending motherhood has forced her to give up smoking and caffeine.

Jackie also divulged her lifestyle and workload - to increase next year as co-host of Big Brother - led to her becoming a recluse.

"I kind of lost the plot, really,'' she said.

With her face plastered over billboards and regular TV appearances, Jackie said she closed her door to the outside world.

"I'd just go home at 10.30am and all through winter, I started hibernating, smoking and not eating well,'' she said.

She had no motivation and did not want to socialise. Husband Lee Henderson started to worry about her.

"We just came to this realisation: `God, I've got to pull myself together','' she said.

She embarked on a health regime. The cigarettes - a packet a day - are gone and she is down to two coffees a day.

She made the turnaround because she wants to fall pregnant - and for her husband.

"Starting late as well, that's at the back of your mind - what if I can't fall straight away?'' she said.

Last week Jackie and Sandilands were basking in the latest radio survey, in which they edged even closer to Alan Jones.

Jackie said her job was perfect for motherhood, as she would be able to broadcast from home or take the baby to work.

Rumours, take them as you will:
Undisclosed source

- Mike Goldman has not been offered a contract for the 2008 season of Big Brother. SSE are disappointed with the ratings of 'Friday Night Download' which has become the icing on the cake considering how reluctant they were to re-sign initially.

- Up-Late will be renamed to 'Big Brother LIVE!' and will feature an uninterrupted feed from the house at all times through a split screen. Phone games will be featured on the program during the broadcast. Digital viewers will have the choice to listen to the house feed or the studio feed (similar to the sporting channels on Foxtel).

- Nikki Osborne (known best for hosting Quizmania and appearing on The Nation with Mick Moley) is expected to be the new host of Up-Late.

- Nomination Night: "The Gamble". A new part of nominations will be introduced on Monday Nights called 'The Gamble'. Housemates can choose to play 'The Gamble' which involves:
If the housemate can pick the three least popular housemates in the house, from the previous nation vote, in order - the will be free from eviction.
If the housemate incorrectly picks the three least popular housemates or mixes the order, they will automatically be put up for nomination.
Footage of 'The Gamble' can be viewed optionally by the other housemates.

- Friday Night Live will be hosted by Bree Amer, Ryan Fitzgerald and former Big Brother housemate Tim Brunero. Its expected the games will be far more challenging in 2008. A small rumour would suggest the loser of the Games will be put into an empty room for 24 hours - similar to the 'Survivor' Exile Island. This room includes a television with footage of who each of the housemates voted for.

- The series will only run for 10 weeks, due to 'So you think you can dance: The Australian version)

- The household spa will return to Big Brother in 2008, however be coin operated. Housemates must purchase volumes of time in the spa. This may also possibly happen to the Gym.

- The show will be limited to just four intruders for the series. Each intruder will have a special mission, and be unable to win the overall competition - but win an individual price pool.

- Talks are in place with the 'Facebook'. Each housemate would have a Facebook account, and could have up to one hour a week to blog and communicate with fans from the house. Of course, comments would be screened. Housemates for the first time would be encouraged 'promote' themself to win the competition.

- The prize money will be $500, 000 flat.

Daily Telegraph kirjoitti: Kyle's bid for X-rated BB

New Big Brother host Kyle Sandilands says the controversial adults-only version of the show is on its way back - despite opponents' claims the late-night edition is "sleaze, it's voyeuristic, it's soft porn.

Kuva

KYLE Sandilands and Jackie O won't be the only contentious additions to next year's Big Brother.

Sandilands, BB's new host, has revealed Channel 10 is likely to resurrect its late-night adults-only show in 2008.

He said 10 should never have kowtowed to wowsers and taken the controversial adult-only BB show off air.

The weekly show - which featured nudity, masturbation, swearing and other antics deemed too rude for primetime viewing - did not screen this year as producers bowed to political pressure to axe it after the infamous "turkey-slapping" incident.

Even Prime Minister John Howard joined BB's vocal protestors, labelling the show "stupid" and calling for it to be dumped.

"I know John Howard did the classic old person thing and freaked out about it (adults only) when he had never even seen it," Sandilands said.

"He would never watch that sort of show you can tell just by looking at him.

"I believe it is now coming back after Channel 10 got scared into taking it off this year.

"It definitely has a place on television.

"It's a program I enjoyed watching."

Christian Democrat Party president Rev Fred Nile said there would be "strong opposition" to the return of adults-only BB.

He said it encouraged the housemates to behave in a more explicit fashion and potentially corrupt teenage and child viewers.

"It's virtually just a sex show - you might as well go and have a look at what they're doing in Kings Cross," he said.

"I would call on Channel 10 to rethink this."

Family Council of Victoria secretary Bill Muehlenberg said reinstating the adults-only program was a backwards step.

"It's sleaze, it's voyeuristic, it's soft porn really," he said.

"I don't see how watching other people's sex lives is entertainment.

"If it's a matter of supply and demand, is there really a demand for it or are they just supplying it hoping entice people into becoming voyeurs?

"It's a low point for television creativity."

BB took a dive in the ratings this year and its detractors hoped this would spell the end of it.

But, late last month, Channel 10 announced Sandilands and O would take over from Gretel Killeen as hosts as part of a major revamp, including a new housemate selection process and a new-look eviction show.

Earlier this year Killeen and network programming chief David Mott admitted that BB had played it too safe this year at the expense of ratings.

Killeen went so far as to suggest that losing adults-only had lost them ratings.

"We have done incredibly well when you consider that we have lost a show (Adults Only) this year," Killeen said.

"I look at this year as a regrouping year."

Although it never actually aired on television, outrage over last year's turkey-slapping incident sparked a Federal Government review of reality TV rules.

The review found 22 per cent of viewers were offended by the content of reality television shows, but did not affect broadcast regulations.

Meanwhile, 10 was yesterday hosing down rumours that Australian Idol was also set for a major shake-up in 2008 _with judges Marcia Hines and Mark Holden's fate in doubt - to cut costs and boost falling ratings.

Herald Sun kirjoitti: Kyle Sandilands wants a chat show

LOVE him or hate him, Kyle Sandilands is here to stay.

Australian Idol's so-called mean judge has just signed a three-year contract with the Channel 10 singing contest and, with his radio co-host Jackie O, has been made the new host of Big Brother.

He also hopes to have a David Letterman-style late-night chat show one day.

Next year Sandilands and O replace Gretel Killeen - the host since BB started seven years ago.

Network programming chief David Mott flagged the revamp earlier this year when the show took a hit in the ratings.

At the time, Mott admitted BB had bowed to political pressure and played it too safe this year.

Though changes were expected, most viewers - Sandilands included - assumed Killeen would still host it.

Sandilands says Killeen wanted to pursue new challenges, so Ten approached him to take over.

Though Sandilands is moving to Los Angeles to be with fiancee Tamara Jaber, who is pursuing a music career in the US, he will spend up to six months in Australia filming Idol and BB.

Sandilands says that as well as having new hosts, BB's weeknight programs will be overhauled and viewers will help choose the 2008 housemates by voting for contestants' videos posted online.

The controversial adults-only program is likely to be back.

"From talking to the contestants, I think there has been a lot more sex going on in the house than we know about," he says.

"I think we've just scratched the surface of what has been going on."

Sandilands wants his BB to better reflect the real world.

"It's become a bit too much of a frat party," he says.

"We all love looking at pretty girls and dopey surfers, but I would prefer to see an old lady in there who hates loud noise, parties and girls in bikinis.

"I want to see generations X, Y and the baby boomers all in there together to see how they interact."

It's not Sandilands' first appearance on BB.

He went into the house to stir things up this year, but left early after suffering a crippling migraine.

His first TV appearance was on Celebrity BB in 2002 where, he says, Killeen was "extremely supportive".

He admits Killeen has become synonymous with BB, but says replacing a high-profile person on an established show is hardly new territory for him.

It was Sandilands who filled Ian "Dicko" Dickson's spot on Idol's judging panel three years ago when Dicko pursued hosting roles and bigger dollars at Seven.

"People said I had big shoes to fill when Dicko left," he says.

"But his shoes weren't so big. He's a size 7. His feet are chubby but they are not very long.

"It was hard going into an established show.

"I hadn't done TV like that before and I was going in to replace someone.

"My first couple of days I was gulping for air, wondering what I had got myself into.

"But I have just been myself; I have never tried to fill anyone's shoes."

Sandilands says he will approach his BB hosting duties the same way he has with Idol and his radio show: unscripted, honestly, irreverently, not shying from tough questions.

Contestants "know what they are getting themselves into" when they go into the house and should be put through the wringer, he says.

"I am not going to read questions off a teleprompter," he says.

"I will ask and say whatever comes into my head at the time."

Off-the-cuff comments have landed Sandilands in trouble in the past.

He drew criticism for telling Idol contestant Kate DeAraugo that she had "tuckshop arms" and Jessica Mauboy that she had a "jelly belly".

He has been labelled "the mean judge".

The label, he says, implies he is playing a role rather than saying what he truly feels.

He says he is always honest and consistent with his advice.

This consistency resulted in him being the lone judge to escape the wrath of the recently ousted contestant Tarisai Vushe, he says.

Vushe has lashed out at Dicko, Mark Holden and Marcia Hines, accusing them of victimising her for ratings.

Sandilands says he understands Vushe's frustration at the mixed messages from the other judges, but now needs to move on.

"One week they'll tell someone to challenge themselves and then, when they do, they'll tell them to stick with what they do best," he says.

"Some of the judges on the panel can be a bit senile because they can't remember what they say from week to week.

"I have one clear vision and stick with it."

He is the first to admit he is hated by a lot of people.

He used to take the criticism to heart, but has learned to accept, if not embrace, the fact that he "can't please everyone", he says.

Too often people make judgments about him based on exaggerated negative rumours or newspaper reports, he says.

He admits some have been turned off him after tuning in to his radio show when he is on one of his tirades.

He wants people to look beyond what they've seen or heard about him and give the new-look BB a try.

"If Peter's brings out a new mango swirl (ice cream) I am at least going to give it a lick," he says.

"I am not as big an a...hole as people think.

"I am not saying I am Mr Nice Guy, but I am not as bad as they make out."

Big Brother 8 kestää luultavasti vain 10 viikkoa. :(
Financial Review kirjoitti: Big Brother gets cut down to size

Fresh from signing an estimated $30 million deal with Endemol Southern Star to secure the eighth season of Big Brother next year, Ten network has started hawking sponsorships for the program to media agencies and marketers.

Ten has not yet revealed how much money it wants, but it has talked about sponsorships covering the main program, spin-off programs on its Ten-HD high-definition channel (which launches in December) and the Big Brother website. Executives from Ten have also said that the next Big Brother series would run for about 10 weeks, down from up to 15 weeks for previous series.

The change is not surprising - Big Brother's audience sagged 10 per cent this year and Ten wants to slot another reality show - a local versin of the US series So You Think You Can Dance - into the first half of its 2008 program line-up.

But cutting Big Brother to 10 weeks could create problems for long-term sponsors such as Yum! Brands* and Hutchison Telecom, which need to run 14- to 15- week promotions to justify the cost of sponsoring the series.

Yum! has been a Big Brother sponsor since the series started in 2001.

"Yum! invests a lot of money in the sponsorship and preparing promotions and competitions to run in its stores," said one media buyer. "It needs the series to run for at least 14 weeks to be able to guarantee a reasonable return on its investment."

A spokesperson for Ten confirmed that Big Brother would be shorter next year but said: "We can't confirm 10 weeks as it always depends on how the series goes; there's a lot of flexibility in the format".

Ten has already announced Big Brother host Gretel Killeen would be replaced by Sydney radio announcers Jackie O'Neill and Kyle Sandilands.

"Gretel Killeen wasn't the reason for Big Brother's decline this year," Universal McCann general manager Henry Tajer said. "Big Brother has become a niche program for Ten. If the changes for next year stop the decline, that would be as good as a result as Ten could hope for."

This year's audience decline and the shorter run planned for next year enabled Ten to reduce the cost of Big Brother.

The network paid Endemol Southern Star an estimated $33 million for this year's 14-week series. (The production company is 49 per cent owned by Southern Cross Broadcasting's Southern Star division, which is being bought by Fairfax Media, the publisher of the Australian Financial Review.)

Ten paid an estimated $15 million for the first Big Brother, which generated strong ratings.

Nine Network's then owner, Kerry Packer, offered more than $20 million for the second series. A bidding war ensued and Ten was forced to pay $24 million. The price then steadily increased each year.

The Age kirjoitti: Gretel, you will be missed

SO AFTER six years of making the Australian Big Brother the thing it is, Gretel Killeen has got the chop. It's hard to see how the show will recover from the consequences of what looks like an ill-considered decision.

She is to be replaced by the blood-curdling Kyle Sandilands in company with his "sweet" co-host Jackie O in a move that will appal not only Big Brother diehards (like myself) but the legion of people who thought that Gretel Killeen, with her wit and pizzazz, brought a dignity and a style to what was essentially a smorgasbord of voyeurism for teenagers and young adults.

That's not my perspective. I think that the trick with Big Brother is that it reproduces the conditions of confined intimacy (school, office, what have you) and speeds it up so that the juices start running.

Whether or not they accept this theory (which can only be tested by sustained exposure) no one who has ever seen much of Big Brother could doubt the grace under fire and the superb improvisational competence that Gretel Killeen brought to the role of host.

As she strode down the runway in that great array of outfits looking what she was - an Australian woman past 40 but wearing it well - there was no doubting the ease, the authority and the drop-dead charisma of a natural-born entertainer.

Killeen brought the skills of a stand-up comic - a sense of danger and flawless timing - to a reality TV show that under her watch contained the ambiguities of a sleaze fest yet was also family entertainment.

She rode the waves of everything that could and did go wrong with this whirlwind of a show (all those young egos soaring and shattering like Spitfires) with extraordinary skill.

You could see her rising to deal with objectively impossible situations - Merlyn leaving the show with his "Save the Refugees" sign, the incident of the "turkey slap" - and coping with them. Not necessarily well, but as well or better than you could imagine any other conceivable host of such a show doing.

She gave the impression of having worked out, early on, that the only way you could keep your head as the host of a show where the contestants were definitionally losing theirs was to improvise with the range of emotions.

Gretel was capable of being imperious and scornful, especially with smarty-pants young show-offs of men who thought they could take every trick in sight. She especially loathed it when they thought they could see her coming.

On the other hand, she could be womanly, nurturing, a great beacon of comfort to some young country girl in a state of disarray, scarcely knowing where she was or who she was, when she was voted off the show.

She constantly dramatised her emotions, but she had the skill of a master of improvisation - up there with Graham Kennedy or Bert Newton - to stylise emotions and opinions that were real in the first place.

She never for a moment talked down to her audience. Her vocabulary was educated, sharp, racy and she took no prisoners. Gretel Killeen on Big Brother always showed the earthiness and the grace of a tough Australian woman who knew the world was absurd but was touched by things that might be cruel or tender or just plain wacko.

She actually had that rare quality, which all the great television hosts have, of being interesting while turning a mirror on the person she was talking to, no matter how young and ungainly or stir crazy they might be.

She was shrewd and consistently funny and quite unusually real. I have watched hundreds of hours of her and have heard her say, on screen, how she could quail before the size of the egos parading before her.

It's to her credit that if they sometimes made her die inside she never showed it. She could grow hot with anger and she had a fine line in scathing disdain but as a performer at the wheel of an always dangerous reality TV show, she seemed equal to the task.

She was womanly without being tame. Sexy without being a cliche. She looked and acted her age. She embodied, with a high and mighty individuality, a strong, sharp-tongued, easy-going Australian femaleness that anyone could recognise but which we don't see often enough on our TV screens.

It's a saddening thing that someone as talented and magnetic as Gretel Killeen is to be replaced on Big Brother by Kyle Sandilands, with his creepy, back-stabbing aggression and his slithering negativity.

Whatever Sandilands' talents may be (and some would say he's simply so reptilian you can't stop watching him) he seems a million miles from the red-blooded intelligence and open-heartedness of Killeen.

It's possible that Sandilands - as opposed to a likeable plain-talker who speaks his mind like Dicko - confronts everybody with the image of his inner being.

Well, good luck to him. His passive-aggressive poisoning of the wells looked like a bit of a fizzer when he appeared, briefly, as a guest on Big Brother last year. He will have to do a lot better if he is not to sink the show in the wake of Killeen's departure. Perhaps Jackie O will be enough of a soft cop to balance things but it's hard to see how.

If Killeen had to go, most Big Brotherites would much rather have seen Mike Goldman, the likeable and world weary face of Big Brother Up Late take centre stage.

Gretel Killeen might take some solace in the fact that it's taken two people (each of them icons of extremity) to replace her, whereas she could walk the tightrope of her own tempests and serenities.

It's a pity she's going though, because Gretel Killeen was that rare thing on Australian television, someone with the skills and temperament of a genuine star.

If there's any justice in the world (or any appreciation of talent) someone will find as big a gig for her elsewhere.

The Sydney Morning Herald kirjoitti: From Big Brother to the big screen

GRETEL KILLEEN will star in her own independent feature film, having left Big Brother.

Killeen has revealed she will write, direct and star in a low-budget movie, which she said would be made in Australia next year. The 46-year-old is in the process of writing the script.

"A group of us are doing a film at the beginning of the year, which I'm writing and directing, so I'm madly writing that at the moment," Killeen said.

"We're kind of doing it in a cowboy manner, which won't surprise people because that's kind of the way I like getting things done. I am an independent thinker and it's an independent film."

When asked whether she was going to star in the film, she said: "Only because we have a limited budget. Also, that's where I started. I started as a performer, with comedy and with stand-up - and, going way back, I was a performer in sketch comedy and television."

Killeen was coy about the storyline of the film but confirmed it would be an Australian-based plot. Killeen said she gained some directing experience making community service announcements for UNICEF overseas.

"I had some experience directing a documentary in Africa and we've also finished doing some commercials this year in Laos."

Killeen, who is believed to be still on the payroll for Channel 10 despite being removed from Big Brother, said she was in discussions about future television duties.

"At the moment I'm doing this feature film - and talking about other television projects," she said.

"We're having talks about other shows and, who knows, we'll just see how those talks progress."

The Sydney Morning Herald kirjoitti: Big Brother saboteurs rock the vote

Big Brother likes to call the shots, so he could be in for a nasty surprise after agreeing to throw part of the audition process for the 2008 series open to an online vote.

Following flagging ratings for this year's outing and criticisms the show had become tired and predictable, Big Brother's producers have promised to give viewers more control over who goes into the house next year.

Would-be housemates have been invited to submit a 90-second audition clip on the Big Brother website.

The submissions will be put to an online vote from next month with the top three guaranteed a spot in the house and the top 50 guaranteed to go through to the second round of auditions. The remaining housemates will be chosen by the producers, Endemol Southern Star (ESS).

"The view is that we'll probably attract that bigger and wider pool of people who might not be able to get somewhere to do an audition but they can certainly get online to do it," Ten's head of digital media, Damian Smith, said

But Big Brother fans are already plotting ways they could rig the voting system to ensure their favourite gets into the house.

Members of the Behind Big Brother fan community are in the process of deciding which of them will be the guinea pig.

"Someone here must be foolish enough to want to be a Big Brother Housemate?" wrote forum member Warren_Oates.

"This place has thousands of members. If we all voted for the same person we should be able to stack the voting system."

Mr Smith said people would need to register an account on the Big Brother website in order to vote and only one vote would count per registered user. However, it's not clear whether there will be anything stopping someone from registering multiple accounts.

"We're doing everything possible to ensure that the voting is legitimate," Mr Smith said.

He said the online vote would be final one but the show's producers would still have veto power because Ten and ESS owed the other housemates a "duty of care". They had to "make sure that [the selected] people are capable of doing the housemate thing".

Ten recently created its own channel on YouTube to promote certain shows but Mr Smith said the Big Brother '08 audition process would be done exclusively through bigbrother.com.

In another attempt at renewal, Big Brother institution Gretel Killeen was dumped as the show's host last week in favour of radio personalities Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O.

Daily Telegraph kirjoitti: Big Brother shake up

A RAFT of changes - from senior management down to programming - are set to deliver a much needed shake up to Channel Ten reality show Big Brother in 2008.
While securing 2DAY FM hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O to replace veteran brother mother Gretel Killeen may have been a coup for producers, the pair's demanding radio schedule has placed restrictions on their availability for the small screen.

As a result, it is understood the BB Monday night nominations program will be scrapped from the programming schedule next year - leaving Sandilands and his sidekick to concentrate on the higher rating Sunday night eviction.

Sandilands' manager admitted her star charge would not quite fill Killeen's rather large shoes when he takes the BB reins next year.

"I do know that there will be a whole heap of changes, and Kyle will absolutely not be as heavily involved as Gretel was in the show,'' India Bent told Confidential.

Industry sources suggest BB narrator Mike Goldman's role will be more involved as the hyped hosts pull back.

"It's definitely going to be interesting times - one thing for sure is that the whole show will be turned on its head,'' Goldman said.

"A lot of the staff - not just Gretel - who have worked on the show for years have left, and from what I understand it will be completely different.''

A BB spokesman was staying tight-lipped yesterday, refusing to confirm or deny any rumours about the 2008 series.

In addition to Killeen's departure, Kris Noble has been replaced by Rory Callaghan as the director of BB production company Endemol Southern Star.

BB has long been Noble's baby, but the addition of Callaghan - the man who produced the first series of Channel Seven's ratings smash hit Dancing with the Stars is expected to add some splash to the tired reality fishbowl.

Huhuja..
- Despite speculation, Mike Goldman has signed on for Big Brother 2008. SSE and Goldman signed a contract on the 9/11 - the pair were in talks for weeks leading to the contract signing, which is why Channel Ten confidentally released the press release announcing the return of the FNL team.

- Tim Brunero will still be involved in the series in some form.

- It's believed Channel Ten have signed a contract allowing first chance at securing a contract for Big Brother 2009. Unlike previous contracts, Channel Ten only showed interest for one series rather then two. This is why this clause is in state.

- The duration of Big Brother will be 10 weeks, a two week gap between programming has been made available as discussed in this post. It will naturally depend on the programs ratings if this slot is used or not. This is similar to the way the Biggest Loser is produced with a gap on the end of the season to extend.

- Friday Night Live will be inviting viewers to create games for the show. Winners (x 2) will win a Big Brother prize and have there game on the finale of FNL.

- 3mobile will be the official mobile provider of Big Brother in 2008. Discussions have begun to host a designated mobile program similar to the Behind Idol program on Telstra mobiles. This may be hosted by Tim B.

- Kris Noble was against replacing Gretel with Kyle and J'o. This along with many other creative direction disputes led to Noble leaving the program.

Program Rumours

- Big Brother will be returning to the traditional, all male Big Brother voice in 2008.

- Nomination show may not be a 'hosted' program, but run like the daily show with a voice over. The Monday daily show would be extended for Nominations each week. All nominations will be pre-recorded.

- Housemates who forget to wear their microphones will be punished in a new exciting way, stay tuned.

- Like previous seasons, there will be a relationship in the house in 2008
- Nomination show may not be a 'hosted' program, but run like the daily show with a voice over. The Monday daily show would be extended for Nominations each week. All nominations will be pre-recorded.
Toivottavasti tämä ei ainakaan toteudu!
